Hack Your Habits

Build a personal system that makes better habits easier and unhelpful habits harder.

Changing behavior is easier when you design the system around it.

Why this project matters

Learn by doing something real.

Most people try to change habits with motivation alone, but motivation is unreliable. Real behavior change often comes from designing better systems, environments, cues, routines, and feedback loops. This project helps students study their own habits, run a small behavior-change experiment, and build a practical system that supports healthier choices.

What you will create

Your project plan

Use these deliverables as milestones for Hack Your Habits. Adapt the details to your interests, available time, and real-world opportunities.

  1. 01

    Habit Audit

Choose one habit to build or reduce, then document when it happens, what triggers it, what gets in the way, and why it matters.

  2. 02

    Behavior Design Plan

Create a realistic strategy using cues, routines, rewards, friction, environment design, and small steps.

  3. 03

    Habit Tracker

Build a simple tracking system to record behavior, mood, energy, consistency, barriers, and patterns over time.

  4. 04

    Environment Redesign

Change something in your surroundings, schedule, phone, workspace, or routine to make the desired habit easier or the unwanted habit harder.

  5. 05

    Habit Experiment Case Study

Publish a portfolio-ready case study explaining the habit, system, tracking results, insights, failures, improvements, and reflection.

Make the work stronger

What separates a finished project from a meaningful one?

For Hack Your Habits, use these checkpoints to protect the quality of the work without turning the project into a performance for admissions.

Avoid this

  • Choosing too many habits at once
  • Relying only on motivation
  • Making the plan too unrealistic

Evidence that it is working

  • One habit was selected
  • Current behavior patterns were audited
  • A behavior design plan was created

If you want to go further

  • Test the same habit system with a friend or family member
  • Create a visual habit dashboard
